Open with empathy and signpost the consultation in natural English.
Take the core clinical history: onset and trigger, ability to speak, wheeze/cough, reliever inhaler use and effect, previous admissions/intubation, fever/sputum.
Screen red flags: speaking only single words, silent chest, cyanosis, low oxygen saturation, exhaustion.
Repair medical jargon with patient-friendly explanations and check understanding.
Explain first tests in plain English: oxygen saturation, PEF before and after treatment, respiratory exam, ABG/VBG if severe.
Summarize, invite correction, and give specific safety-netting language.
